Organised religions are always looking for ways to entice new believers. Now it looks like Playboy may have stumbled on a winning strategy: porn. The Mexican edition of the magazine recently published a cover (left) that features a topless model draped in white cloth, standing next to a stained glass window with the words "Te Adoramos, Maria" written underneath.
Amazingly, some people thought the cover was a reference to the Virgin Mary.
"How many nativity scenes are out there this time of the year?" Father Albert Cutie, a radio host from the USA, told CNN. "How many times is Mary a central figure in this whole celebration? And this is offensive. This is very offensive. It's blasphemous."
Playboy has since issued an apology pointing out that the Mexican edition of the magazine is published by a licensee, and does not have its covers approved or edited by the US-based Playboy Inc.
"While Playboy Mexico never meant for the cover or images to offend anyone, we recognise that it has created offense, and we as well as Playboy Mexico offer our sincerest apologies," the statement said.
We would never take a side in a debate like this -- and for the record, we're long-standing Playboy fans. But let us just say that if every image in the bible was this hot, we'd be going to church a lot more than we are.

Father Albert...there's no such thing as blasphemy, since god and jesus were in invented to control the population in the past. People have woken up since and now realise that religion is complete fabricated rubbish. All religions should be banned.

If you think religions should be banned then you are as much a bigot as those you claim are so misguided. What gives you the right to ban something just because YOU don't believe in it?
You complain about a religious man making his voice heard on something he considers important and yet you want to ban people like him... and me... all together.
You presumably want a totalitarian police state where you get to wear the hob-nail boots and tell everyone what they can and cannot believe. Smacks of ultra-communism if you ask me!

Well I don't find it offensive and I'm a believer but I can see how some people would.
For me sexuality is a big part of spirituality - the two things go hand in hand.
But that is not the case with everyone and we all should be sensitive to other people's feelings.

Just how dies this look like the virgin mary? it looks like a hot chick with a sheet draped over her head and shoulders to me. i could be wrong but who said that the virgin mary is the only one to own a sheet and who says she was hot anyway? though it could her, why not? she did after all get knocked up before getting married.

Well said, bush1do2005 - the whole thing is an outmoded & archaic system of control & this is the 21st Century after all - time to wake up & smell the coffee, people!

"The belief that an all-seeing, all-knowing, all-loving parent watches over & protects us also ensures that we never truly grow up".
And you believe the stupidity of that quote do you? Faith in one greater than ourselves is not childish, it is a sign that we recognise our own flawed humanity and need for the help and support of others.
Of course if you really want to go around believing the rantings of the evangelistic atheist Mr Dawkins, I am sure you will find plenty who will join you. There have been countless atheists over the millennia yet still the majority of intelligent adult people the world over claim belief in some form of higher power.
Nice attempot at marginalising people of faith Jacob. Sadly you failed by not thinking it through very carefully.
This image on the magazine is not 'Mary' but it is CLEARLY an attempt at a representation of that particular religious figure. To deny that is plain daft!
As has been said, try doing the same thing with a representation of Mohammed and see how you get on. I guess you are reliant on the tolerance and grace of Christians to say what you want!

She looks nothing like the Virgin Mary it's not the picture it's the words that are written. Maybe lots of people do not believe in God but lots of us do and I found it very offensive that the woman on the cover should dare to compare herself to the Virgin Mary - shame on you.

Religions stupify, control, instill fear but Christianity is about a relationship not a Religion. A personal relationship you can have with God through knowing Jesus Christ which is why He came to earth.

I'm sorry, but where is the referance to the Virgin Mary?
Want to talk about offensive? I find it offensive that some religeous groups would rather kill me than let me have my own religeous views. I find it offensive that some people are trying to take the Christ out of Christmas. I find it offensive that the Christian Bible is a band book in some countiees while certain groups would have sharia law foysted on the Chrisitan people of the UK.

Hmmm, interesting how some might think the covergirl resembles a thirteen year old girl-the age of mary when she didn't give birth, or rather did, I think. I think that says far more about the scorning than the scorned. Similar sentiments come when misogynistic men of certain cultures accuse women wearing 'revealing' clothing to be aiming to stimulate 'impressionable' men. Only impressionable if you have hang ups I'd say.
