Formula One bosses have tried a series of measures to liven-up the sport, but a web video featuring McLaren star Lewis Hamilton suggests that removing the drivers from the equation could be the next step.

The promo film for Vodafone shows an office worker racing a model F1 car around a home-made circuit, using a mobile phone to steer it.

The film then jumps to a test track in Portugal, where the same technology is used to let Lewis Hamilton steer his McLaren Mercedes around the paddock and track.

We'd never be so churlish as to suggest that F1 is already like a robotic procession, devoid of any thrills and spills, but perhaps seating the drivers in the grandstand and allowing them to drive by remote control might lead to the sort of destruction derby mayhem we all secretly want in our motor racing?

We bet some of the drivers in this gallery of incredible crashes wished they'd been steering by remote control...
