So American comedian Steve Harvey thinks that atheists have no morals. This raises an interesting question -- not if Atheists have morals or Steve Harvey is a bigot, but who has be best put-downs, atheists or believers? If you follow our logic -- Steve Harvey is religious and not funny, George Carlin was an atheist and hilarious.
It's like a your-momma joke competition, but this time your momma is your father who art in heaven (or perhaps just in your noggin). And if you look at the material, we firmly believe that the atheists have won.
To aid you in this important task we've made a very brief list of famous atheist comedians and another of comics who practice religion. Then -- and this is when the smackdown really begins -- we've included clips of atheist comedians going after religion, and religious comedians going after atheism.
Check it all out after the jump, and please add to our incomplete lists in the comment section.
Atheist comedians -- George Carlin, David Cross, Ricky Gervais, Patton Oswalt, Bill Maher and Eddie Izzard.
Believer comedians -- Dane Cook, Steve Harvey, Chris Tucker, Sacha Baron Cohen, Kevin Smith and Stephen Colbert (even in jest).
Team Atheist
In perhaps the most famous of all the comedic anti-religion screeds, George Carlin pulls no punches in his assault on the "invisible man in the sky." Then he throws a curve ball by admitting he worships the sun, but prays to Joe Pesci. (NSFW)
Ricky Gervais used to believe in evolution, until he discovered the truth -- namely that all the world's animals derive from a leaky raft built by a man called Noah on orders from the big bloke in the sky. Or so he says in this clip, which while picking on a pretty soft target does it pretty wonderfully. (NSFW)
In this clip, Eddie Izzard, famed cross-dresser, makes fun of the logic and traditions of Easter and Christmas.
Team God
Dane Cook was minding his own business when an atheist sneezed directly in his face. But, never fear, every sorority girl's favorite comic came right back at the vulgar God-denier with a stiff jab of existential dread. (NSFW)
Christian comedian Mark Lowry weaves a delightful tale of what he does after he traps an atheist in his house. We don't know who the Sam Elliot look-alike sitting behind Lowry is but, yes, that is one inspiring beard/hair combo.
Stephen Colbert seems to flounder in this interview and, if anything, seems to end up making fun of the religious.

For some reason I think they might be incorrect about Kevin Smith. I mean, the man who wrote and directed 'Dogma', and was also good friends with one of the most well known atheists ever, George Carlin... that doesn't add up to 'believer' to me.

Kevin Smith's Dogma was funny because he simply fully accepted all the, well, dogma, as real and true. When you do that it's absurd. He says he's a Christian. You calling him a liar?

Colbert: Wow. I couldn't tell.
Dane Cook: That joke pissed me off to no end when I first saw it. When I sneeze and someone says "bless you", I just say thanks or excuse me.

Colbert: apparently he's a Catholic, not the fundie he portrays on his show, and possibly enough of a moderate to accept making copious fun of himself and religion at times.

Nearly all the TV ( and comedy circuit) comedians in the UK are known to be atheists. All, except Frank Skinner - the hemi-demi-semi amusing, foul-mouthed catholic.

I tend to think it being more between authoritarian and libertarian (which are distinct scales from left/right, religious/atheist). Such that a good comedian, like a good journalist, challenges authority and concepts. They hold a mirror up to society, and it shouldn't really matter about their own opinions as long as they are being fair in their assessment.
Colbert is a great example, you can never truly tell what exactly he believes and it doesn't matter. I think he's a progressive Catholic, but he could as easily be an atheist, conservative, or whatever. He's definitely not a fundamentalist though... makes too much fun of the pope ^^ which I don't believe a fundie Catholic could do, given the 'infallibility'.

Bill Hicks is probably my favorite comedian of all time, and has tons of excellent criticism of religion, though he might not have been an atheist entirely. Doug Stanhope I think probably is an atheist, again, excellent criticism of religion and a close competitor with Hicks for my favorite. Louis CK has some hilarious criticism of catholicism on youtube as well. All three of them are extremely offensive, which has largely kept them out of the mainstream, probably in part due to their criticisms of organized religions (Louis CK has had the most success, and Doug is probably the greatest offender).

Norm Macdonald, who is often called "the comedian's comedian," is a Christian too. He's hilarious, and much beloved by his fans, but his bits on religion are his weakest bits.

There are many, many other interviews in which Colbert dons the creationist view in order to satirize it. The appearance of making fun of the religious was intentional. Just as when he argues against gay marriage with the most absurd strawman arguements, or for Ron Paul's gold standard, he's parodying the false logic of these positions.

thanks to PZ Meyers and twitter, all religious related internet polls are completely unreliable... Before PZ Meyers tweet, the percentage for the theist comedians was 32%. Just wanted to throw that out there. By the way, it's a tough call... I think Colbert is one of the best.

Aside from the creepy "I locked all the doors!" and the lame "I don't have enough faith..." remarks, look at Lowry's audience! Mostly old people who're probably all anti-abortion, too.

"The best we can do is send a Tonka truck to Mars"?! THIS is comedy?! Lowry and his ilk could NEVER in their muddy dreams begin to approach the achievements that the Mars rover program represents. What colossal ignorance! What boresome, unoriginal, petty observations this rube vomits to his eager audience.
