Japanese culture has always been a mix of quiet, honourable precision (caligraphy, banraku puppet theatre etc) and the truly insane (terrifying game shows and manga porn). We think this falls somewhere in between. Over the weekend the 26th annual Pig Rodeo was held in Mikame, western Japan. Featuring athletes -- well, anyone who's mad enough to try -- riding unwilling, 285-pound pigs around a paddock, the contest also boasts a £300 prize for the person who holds on the longest.
The event forms part of the Seiyo City Mikame Summer Festival, and we are reliably informed that it is growing in fame each year. Other events include human curling, and a more sedate fireworks show.

Pig Rodeo - Another form of animal cruelty and humility and supported by AOL? Why can't people enjoy themselves without abusing animals?
