In what can only be described as the oddest road safety initiative we have ever heard about, good drivers in Bulgaria are to be rewarded with free salami. This week, motorists who are seen to give right of way to pedestrians at crossings in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia, will be flagged down and given the free meat based snack.
Officials hope the bizarre meaty move will encourage hungry motorists to avoid running down children as the new school year begins.
More than half of road accidents in Sofia involve pedestrians, many of them children, and drivers are said to rarely give way to pedestrians, even if they are in school uniform and using marked crossing points.
Personally we would like to see this initiative taken to the next level, with drivers getting a bacon sandwich for letting someone pull out at a junction, or maybe a cured meat platter if they don't hog the middle lane of the motorway.
