When a US couple who had previously notched up several drink driving offences decided to go out for a few alcoholic treats recently, they did the sensible thing and took a designated driver.

Unfortunately, their safe pair of hands behind the wheel belonged to a 13-year-old boy.

After going out for a meal in San Anselmo, California, Heather Choulos and boyfriend Donald Hughes came up with the cunning plan of telling the lad to drive them home -- so they could not be arrested.

All was going quite well until he stalled on a major road and refused to continue driving - apparently getting stuck in traffic isn't as much fun as playing Need for Speed on the PS3.

Police went over to investigate what was holding up traffic and discovered the young driver, complete with his sozzled passengers sat in the rear. Choulos, 32, was charged with child endangerment and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

We wouldn't blame the kid for downing a couple of shots of chocolate milk after that experience.
