It was a case of win some, lose some for the animals in their never ending battle against the human.

In Japan giant jellyfish got one over us when they toppled a 10-tonne fishing trawler as the crew tried to haul in their catch.

Dozens of Nomura's jellyfish sunk the Diasan Shinsho-maru boat and sent its three-man crew into the sea, The Mainichi Daily News reported.

The floppy sea-folk can weigh up to 440lbs (that's 32 stone, about 6 stone heavier than titanic Russian boxer Nikolay Valuev) and grow up to 6ft in diameter.

Apparently Japanese seas have been inundated with the jellyfish this year. Experts believe weather and water conditions in the breeding grounds off the coast of China have been ideal for the species in recent months. One expert even said "A huge jellyfish typhoon will hit the country."

Nomura's jellyfish have been tussling with humans for years now. The troublesome sea deserts destroy fishing nets, poison fish in the nets and even disable nuclear power stations by blocking pumps used to cool the reactors. All the fishermen were rescued and will fight another day.

Meanwhile, in Dorking, Surrey, man was underlining his technical dominance over the beasts when an albino squirrel was run over.
"Percy", a cult hero in the historic market town was crossing the road, just off the High Street, when a motorist squashed him.

Lou Gardey was one of the first on the scene after the accident. "Someone had just run over it and then left it lying in the road," she said. "I went to get a bag for him and borrowed a spade."
