A fish and chip shop in Sunderland has added a Gallic twist to its menu -- by offering battered frogs' legs.

Bosses at Katie Mac's say that because of the rising price of fish, they were forced to start looking for cheaper alternatives, and they didn't limit themselves to the sea.

Now, in a move which will have French gastronomes hopping mad (sorry) and choking on their camembert, the store has started deep frying battered frogs legs.

The legs are said to taste just like chicken (horror of horrors) and are proving a hit with cash-strapped punters. The chippie is currently selling 15 portions per week.

Shop owner John McMullan told the Sunderland Echo: "We don't get many French men in Pennywell, but we still manage to sell a few of these. I've tried them and they're a bit like chicken, but they've got a sharper taste."

However we have still got a way to go before we catch up with the prolific frog munching of the French. They are said to get through 60-80 million frogs per year - normally served in butter, garlic and a parsley sauce.
