This man isn't laughing. No sir. Contestants on a French game show have tortured each other with electric shocks until one man cried for mercy and apparently dropped dead. However all was not quite as it seemed, while the participants thought they were starring in the pilot of a reality TV show, it was actually a psychological experiment.
The fake show was designed to test whether being on a TV show could push people to do outrageous things. The answer... a definitive "Oui!"
In the ominously titled 'Le jeu de la mort' (The Game of Death) participants were told to inflict pain on their competition if they answered trivia questions incorrectly.
This was done by flicking a switch to administer electric shocks of various levels up to a potentially fatal 460-volts -- they would then watch the reaction of their rival (actually an actor) on a monitor.
The actor screamed in pain and begged for mercy with each wrong answer, until the contestants increased their 'shocks' to a deathly level.
Makers say 80% of those participating in the show were willing to give a potentially fatal electric shock, if show producers said they should - this they argue shows how TV shows can misuse their power and influence.
The stunt was based on the "Stanley Milgram Experiment" and will air on France 2 tonight as part of a documentary on the manipulative power of television.

This is such old hat. So many people are aware of the Stanley Milgram Social Compliance experiments in the 1960s that many contestants may have known it was a spoof.

I was thinking exactly the same thing...this exact experiment had indeed been performed before with the same results; television is not to blame, previous experiments showed mainly it was the fact the people who believed they were giving the shocks were unaware what a lethal shock would be in volts. In other words, ignorance. But there is that element that they feel it's ok if someone's asking them to do it because of their submissive trust that the person telling them to wouldn't tell them to inflict anything lethal, so blind trust/ignorance is the factor. I'm sure you're right that a lot of people must have known though, because this is by no means new or unique.

To an extent Jonathan and yes I am aware of the experiments as will several others be. Unfortunately however there appears to be a tendency, especially over this last ten years or so, for people who wish to push the limits of not only their own behaviour but that of others on so called reality television shows. Call it bravado or desensitization or even the 'celeb' culture where people are willing to do almost anything to secure their five minutes of fame, but it is happening more and more. At one time the Western cultures shuddered at the 'lack of taste' of the Japanese 'torture'entertainment where contestants where either ridiculed or coerced into performing extremely dangerous feats on national TV. The West is catching up fast!
The craving for 'reality' TV is providing a ready made template for bizarre behaviour and people who are willing to 'bare all' from basic bodily functions to performing things that they would not normally do in more ordinary circumstances and without a viewing public or the encouragement of media hype.
From Big Brother to Im a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, Jeremy Kyle Show, even the visual talent shows, people with weight and very personal health problems, people are now more prepared to discuss their most intimate secrets and reveal personality traits which at one time would have been frowned upon in even a tolerant society. This they can excuse by blaming the organizers of the TV show in question. In any event viewing figures for this type of show have proven that the more sensational a show is - the more success it has, so the boundaries are continually being pushed.
I do forsee a time when a show such as this will come to our screens in truth. Public perceptions are rapidly changing, especially with readily available material from such as Facebook and Twitter, etc., and the easy availability of what would have been classed 'inappropriate' to appropriate visual images on both the web and news media.
This of course is to an extent linked to more and more lack of respect to our fellow human being, whatever their social status or authority. Televised news is more contrived for entertainment and to appeal to those who have a predeliction to be shocked as are the accompanying images. The thirst for this kind of entertainment and visual stimulus will continue.

Shocking. Still... reality TV shows are the current thing. The producers should be charged with battery. I bet the court case would be electric. Is this article giving simply giving the show a plug? Is it available on cable? If it came on I'd make a bolt for the door, and sparks would fly. I'd probably blow a fuse. Was it shown live? What on Earth? Maybe I should be more neutral? Do viewers get to volt people off? Anyway... where are my slippers...

What a laugh, people have been killing and torturing each other for centuries, but because it gets shown on tv it suddenly becomes a bad thing.

What a load of crap, this is an experiment that has been done before with the exact same results. It has nothing to do with TV's influence it is to do with people doing as they're told. The people in the original experiment also gave deadly shocks and for no reason other than that the scientist told them they should.
