Never has the pantomime call of "he's behind you" been so appropriate, so often. This is Paul Yarrow, the man who's been on the news over 100 times this year, just by standing behind the newsreader making his or her report to camera.Typically in a beige sweater, occasionally on his phone, his rotund appearances at news hot spots are becoming as regular as bumping into an old work colleague for the beleaguered reporters in front of 'the news raider'.
His TV CV includes the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Sky news and al-Jazeera - but it's not just limited to the news. He's also a fan of old collectibles, as seen by his appearance on The Antiques Roadshow.
But how does he do it? How does he always know where to be? The 42-year-old from Southwark has said that it's not some magical gift, but "you just have to watch the news and use your common sense to know where the cameras will be."
When he's not cropping up in news reports, it seems that our man Yarrow is also a bit of a good Samaritan, doing his part to help save hospitals and care for the injured and sick, nominated for a host of awards with The South London Press, including Community Champion, Good Samaritan and Carer of the Year.
We might look on it all as a bit of a laugh, but it turns out that he has a message to deliver. Sick of slim and trim and polished professionals being the only ones allowed on screen, Paul is making a stand (literally) for us average joes who don't normally get any screentime to make their points known.
He told The Evening Standard: "Being overweight I get ignored. I could have a valid point about something but the microphone is always passed to the person alongside me." But rest assured, Paul, after you've been discovered, you'll be getting plenty of attention, don't you worry.
Take a look at the assembled footage those clever lads over at Russell Howard's Good News put together of Paul's exploits, then after, check out our stills gallery of his greatest hits. He does love a good bit of news, our Paul.

oh let the guy have his 5 minutes. Life can be too serious sometimes and perhaps he is not in work but at least he's ON telly and not sitting at home watching it day after day.

I think he's had more than his fifteen minutes of fame. I actually think it's creepy the way he stands directly behind reporters, creepy and a little bit sad. It just makes me cringe seeing him now ... sorry

He's not doing anyone any harm, from what I can gather this guy does a lot of voluntary work to help care for injured and sick people, and has been nominated by the South London Press, for various 'good samaritan' awards within the community... People are too quick to judge these days, and that's part of the reason why he does this... As for one of the comments earlier, about him standing directly behind the news reporter, well he couldn't really stand directly in front could he ?... I think the BBC need to do an interview with this guy. might be quite an interesting story behind it all.

I think I have seen this bloke standing behing at least one reporter, then annoyingly walking in and out of shot, but far from thinking he was just trying to get noticed, I thought he probably had a mental problem of some kind and couldn't help himself. Unfortunately, some people will now do just about anything to get noticed and try to secure some pathetic newspaper story or a few tv interviews, while telling the rest of us that they have a really important point to make and that they are 'standing up for what is right' or 'setting the record straight'. The modern media have a lot to answer for.

i agree, at first i thought he had some sort of mental problem. However when i noticed he did not, i watched again and laughed my assoff. Is that mean? sorry if it is.
I think he is lying about charity work, what sort of work could he do? eating contests? okay i admit that is quite too far, but seriously! He looks like the kind of guy who you would find annoying at one glance. He's jobless, lonely and craves attention. But if he does do charity work, good for you!! and i apologise :D

Jenny, I don't think whether he does charity work or not matters very much as far as this story is concerned. Many people do charity work but don't go on about being ignored, and I haven't so far seen a connection between charity and standing around behind reporters on tv. In fact, when you are trying to liten to what a reporter is saying it's rather distracting and annoying to see this idiot popping up everywhere. I hope he comes to his senses soon and concentrates more on charity and less on becoming a celebrity.

As much as it is annoying to the Reporter, he is not doing any harm or causing disruption, he is just standing there and getting notice, which of course he wants. He is just claiming his 5 minutes of glory on the TV and afterall he is supposed to be a good helpful samaritan, so what harm is there in him standing there. Maybe one day a reporter might like to interview him - you never know it might make an interesting story.

He's the same as all the other individuals who stand behind reporters, mobile phone to ear, trying to look cool and inconspicuous but not realising that almost every viewer is saying, "Look at that totally sad twat." They just don't realise how idiotic they actually look.

Hurrah for Mr Yarrow!
I, too, am extremely annoyed by the fact that we do not seem to see anyone over a size 10 on television anymore - unless as an object of ridicule - or being bullied for their size into unnatural and draconian dieting! Shouldn't 'News Reports' in particular honestly mirror the general public that they purport to serve - in all its wondrous shapes and sizes? I have become so sick to death of news presenters, chat show hosts and so called 'reality' show hosts and their general public participants only being recruited from the 'near-skeletal' or 'muscular/athletic-looking' to talk to and supposedly entertain us mere mortals, rarely, if ever, do I wish to watch these shows - Especially those on the BBC - who are particularly 'sizest' in this regard! Just look at the Breakfast line-up of ladies and wonder, if any, would be recruited if a size 24? Well, done Mr Yarrow - Keep at 'em and all their beastly putdownedness!

I had a job once, I was a teacher for twenty-five years. However, I now have a highly unstable memory and cannot concentrate. Today I was told that my Incapacity Benefit been stopped; I don't understand why, I can't understand the letter and forms they sent to me. I don't know what to do. I cannot represent myself properly, because I can't keep a thought in my head from one minute to the next. I try my best to look after my self, but I need help and I don't know what to do, or where to go for help. No one has any patience with me, because I become so confused; no one will listen. I don't know what I am to do; and now I'm so worried because my concentration is now worse than ever!

I don't blame him. Some of these news reporters think they are some sort of god. I was sitting watching an event once and they pitched up right in front of me. When the competitor I was accompanying cam through I shouted and clapped and Duncan Sleighthome made a real fuss about it!!! Who's the derr brain!!!
